A once in a generation pipeline of infrastructure works, combined with record lows in unemployment has seen the creation of a nationwide skills shortage across critical areas in the Civil Industry. Forward thinking Civil Contractors are now developing new ways of ensuring they attract and retain staff – many understand that without skilled staff, their ability to deliver on projects is critically impacted. Are you an Employer of Choice? While staff development and training programs provide opportunities for improving skills and knowledge, they also provide the often-missed opportunity for Civil Contractors to actively promote themselves as an Employer of Choice within the industry. Released in 2022, ICI Australia’s Employer Recognition Program provides the means for employers to be recognized at a national level – based on their investment in team development. Change the conversation The ERP allows employers to change the conversation with existing teams and prospective hires, moving away from hourly rates, and allowing the focus to be on career progression, learning pathways and showcasing the organisation as a team focused employer with a proactive, positive culture. The advantages of being part of the ERP goes beyond the individual team members, with civil contractors able to promote their ERP certification in a number of ways including as part of their tendering certification; as part of their overall branding; and, as a practical way to demonstrate their investment in the industry. Independent Authority As an industry specific, not for profit organisation, ICI Australia’s ERP offers the added advantage of providing independent, third-party certification. Members of the Civil Industry also have the ability to research prospective employers and their training commitment, with an online database, accessible to the public, listing detailed information on current ERP members and the partnership level. Recognition of ERP Partners has been made simple, with complying contractors able to use the ICI branded logos and marketing collateral.
