The four areas prescribed for registration are: Civil Engineering Structural Building Engineers Fire Engineering Mechanical Engineering Commerce Minister Sue Ellery stated ‘This is the first ever registration scheme for engineers in Western Australia. It aligns the State with other jurisdictions, and provides further peace of mind that our buildings are safe and constructed to the required standards. The registration scheme is expected to increase building compliance, reduce rectification costs, increase public confidence in the building industry, and provide a formal recourse process for substandard engineering work.’ The Institute of Civil Infrastructure (ICI Australia) has worked closely with relevant registration schemes across Australia, providing assessments and support for Civil and Structural engineers. Lee Gabbett, the Chief Executive Officer of ICI Australia comments ‘Engineers will benefit from greater professional recognition due to the code of conduct and continued professional development requirements.’ The roll-out includes a transition period of two years, which commences on 1 July 2024 for structural and fire safety engineers, and on 1 July 2025 for civil and mechanical building engineers. Registration becomes mandatory two years after these dates.
