Adding To Your Career Toolbox

By Josh Hallam, General Manager, The Institute of Civil Infrastructure

Consider your career skills as tools inside your tool box. When you have the right tools, of the right quality, you can get the job done efficiently and to a high standard. What happens though when the right tool isn’t there?

The skills you have in your role and your industry are ultimately you career capital. You have developed them over time through on-the-job experience, formal training and development, and through mentoring/coaching from others. These skills have helped you to where you are now, but will they get you to where you want to be?

Being conscious of the key skills you excel in as well as the ones that require development gives you clarity as to what tools are available to complete your job. Taking the time to assess what is in the tool box is essential if you are looking to progress in your career.

If you are like most adults, when you are getting a job done at home and you realise the tool you need to complete the job is not there, the next step is usually out the door to acquire that tool. So why then, when in our workplace when we reach for that tool, or skill, that is not there we ‘make do’ or worse yet, push the problem back on our employer to solve. This doesn’t add to your tool box nor does it add to your career capital.

An alternative solution, similar to working on the job around the house, is doing a quick needs analysis on the tool or skill that is required to complete the job to a higher standard. Based on that need, assess the options to upskill and then take action on what is required. Remember, when you acquire a tool, it remains in your toolbox, ready for the next project. The same happens when you acquire a career skill.

By building your career toolbox, you are more effective as a professional in your current role and pave the way for future progression. Acquiring new career skills through organisations like The Institute, is a flexible and efficient way to build your career capital for now and into the future.
