20 May Building Information Modelling (BIM) May 20, 2022By ICI Administrator Business & Operational Skills 0 What is BIM? Building Information Modelling, also known as BIM, is a model-based technique and procedure for creating and managing information on construction and infrastructure projects. While the basis of BIM dates back to the 1970’s, nowadays it can be described as a digital representation of both physical and functional characteristics of a facility, to be used as a shared knowledge resource which forms a reliable basis for the decision-making process. More than just “fancy 3D”, the model drives greater collaboration on projects by equipping architects, engineers, and construction professionals with the tools they need to plan, design, build, and manage structures and infrastructure. Applicable to small and large projects, BIM has been successfully used in Australia in a number of recent projects, including; Royal Adelaide Hospital Project; Moorebank Intermodal Terminal Project; Barangaroo development, including Wynyard Walk; North West Rail Link; Southern Freight Link; Figure 1: BIM and its participants Regional Rail Link Victoria; South West Rail Link; Auburn Stabling Yard; New Generation Rolling Stock Stabling, Ipswich; Sydney CBD light rail early works; Perth Children’s Hospital; Perth Stadium; and Perth Museum.
