17 November Festive Period Survival Guide Part One November 17, 2020By ICI Administrator Aspire 0 By Olivia Burgin, Courses and Events Coordinator, The Institute of Civil Infrastructure The most wonderful time of the year is approaching fast, and after the year that we have had, the holidays can’t come soon enough. Relaxing in a hot Australian summer, having a dip in the pool, and celebrating Christmas with your family, what could make it any better? On those days that are just too hot to leave the safety of your air-conditioned home, we’ve compiled a list of the top five bingeworthy TV shows to get you through the holidays, sunburn free. 5 – New Girl (2011-2018) The series ‘New Girl’ follow the lives of four roommates navigating their late 20’s. Jess is a bubbly, eccentric teacher who is trying to get over her breakup, she is on the lookout for a new place to stay when she finds three young men; Nick, a law-school-dropout-turned-bartender; Schmidt, a white-collar worker who believes he is God's gift to women; and Winston, a former basketball player. The unlikely bunch makes for a comedy that just gets funnier and smarter each and every season. You may have assumed the worst about New Girl when it originally debuted, however when given some time to develop its characters and plot, it becomes less of a chore to watch, and it has been said to be better when binge-watched. 4 – Breaking Bad (2008-2013) Breaking Bad is television crime drama that follows Walter White, a docile high school chemistry teacher who transforms into a ruthless contender in the New Mexico drug trade, driven by a desire to provide for his family after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. The show has been praised for its great storyline and screenplay, and can be described at suspenseful and unpredictable. Breaking Bad has 5 seasons, with an average of 9.2 stars for every single episode, it also had 229 nominations for television awards, winning 139 of those nominations, making it the most awarded television show in history. If that doesn’t convince you it’s a great watch, you may be missing out on something great. 3 – Our Planet (2019) Our Planet is a British nature documentary series made for Netflix, the series is of course narrated by the one and only, David Attenborough. This series will explore the Earth's most important habitats, and celebrate the life they still provide. It’s revealed in the series what must be preserved if we are to ensure a future where humans and nature can thrive. With only 8 episodes, this one is perfect for those of us who may struggle to commit entirely to one TV show. This short series is also very informative, and definitely an interesting watch. Since its debut, it has been the winner of two Emmy Awards, and nominated for many others. 2 – Game of Thrones (2011-2019) Game of Thrones is a dystopian series of nine noble families waging war against each other in order to gain control over the mythical land of Westeros, meanwhile, an unfamiliar force is rising and threatens the existence of living men. If you haven’t seen this show, what are you doing? With 8 seasons and 73 hour-long episodes, it definitely takes some dedication to get through. This show has been said to be the best show ever made, filled with drama, extensive character development, special effects and incredible intertwining plots. If don’t want to go square-eyed from watching this one, there is also the book series available, and we all know the books are always better. 1 – The Office (U.S) (2005-2013) The Office is a mockumentary sitcom television series that depicts the everyday work lives of office employees in the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. I know this one may sound a little boring, but trust me, it is well worth the watch. The awkward, yet hilarious character, Michael Scott, uses his humour to ‘help’ his colleagues get through their day, although they do tire from his constant unprofessionalism and lack of work ethic. The show also closely follows the development of several amusing, yet strange characters and their relationships, with gripping storylines through the entirety of the nine seasons, keeping you wanting more after every episode. Well, there it is, our top five bingeworthy TV shows from the last decade, give or take a few years. Avoiding 40-degree heat just got a little easier. Let’s hope there’s even more amazing series and shows in 2021.
