25 January Are you part of the “The Great Resignation” trend? January 25, 2022By ICI Administrator Business & Operational Skills, People Management #employeerelations, #greatresignation , #leadership , #learninganddevelopment , #management , #peopleskills, #skillshortage 0 The Great Resignation Workplace experts are warning of an incoming avalanche of employee turnover among Aussie businesses in 2022 — known as ‘The Great Resignation’. The phenomenon is driven by a range of factors, including changing expectations around flexible working, employee burnout, mental health issues, as well as high job vacancies in some sectors leading to candidates seeking better pay and conditions elsewhere. This mass mind shift in employee expectations has also impacted the relationships between workers and managers. According to new research, more than half of Aussie employees have reservations about interacting with their boss when returning to the office after working from home during the pandemic. Reasons you don’t like your manager The reasons for this apparent friction included bosses who lacked emotional intelligence (39%), micromanagement (32%) and lacking empathy about employees’ lives beyond the workplace (31%). Meanwhile, two in three (65%) respondents said their manager or boss lacked soft skills. For young workers in particular, where human relationships have become the priority, they now expect managers to possess a suite of technical and soft leadership skills. So What? So, what does this data tell us? Managers with strong people skills are more critical than ever as organisations look to attract and retain talent in the face of widespread skills shortages. Investing in staff to ensure they feel valued is vital at this time. Companies that put their people first and can play a key role in their development will find themselves with the most satisfied employees, ultimately leading to greater business outcomes and success.
