14 October Recognition Is The Number One Motivator October 14, 2020By ICI Administrator Aspire 0 By Josh Hallam, General Manager ICI Australia Many studies show that being recognised is a significant motivator in the workplace. Recognition can be achieved in a number of ways both internally within your organisation and externally in the industry. We discuss what the top strategies are for recognition in the civil infrastructure industry. Most supervisors, managers and leaders know that recognising their team’s work, effort and skills is important but how many actively provide it? Recognition can come in many forms. You may have employee of the month, team member of the week or other internal initiatives that regularly highlight team member’s achievement. While some work extremely well, regularly, this can become too process driven and result in recognition given because it’s the end of the month or quarter as opposed to being genuinely deserved. Bonuses and incentives are another form of recognition which you would think are amazing, everyone loves money right? Usually yes, but many studies show that money is not the main motivator, particularly with your sub-35-year-old, purpose driven millennials. Herzberg’s two-factor theory talks about money as a hygiene factor – it decreases job dissatisfaction as opposed to motivate employees. External recognition or industry recognition is a great way to showcase your high performers on a larger stage. Nominating their work or projects for industry awards or supporting their grading with industry credentials that builds their reputation across their peers. Industry examples of this include the Civil Contractors Federation NSW People Awards and the Institute of Civil Infrastructure’s national grading program. This kind of initiative shows to your team that you support them as a professional in their chosen career, not just as an employee of the company. If recognition is personal and genuine, your team will be motivated to go above and beyond in their role to drive the success of the project and the mission of the company. How are you being recognised for the great work you are doing and what are you doing to recognise your team members?
